Sam and his family traveled extensively growing up as his father was enlisted in the U.S. Army. He graduated Valedictorian of his graduating class 1960, Tobyhanna, PA. He was enlisted with the U.S. Air Force 1960-1964 and attended the Military Russian Language Program. He attended Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
Sam married Deborah Smith Woods, in 1991, in Jonesboro, AR. He was employed as an engineer at Hytrol Conveyor Co. for 46 years and retired to Bella Vista, AR, in 2014.
Sam leaves behind Deborah Wright and stepchildren, Mathew B. Woods and wife JoAngela Woods, of Jonesboro, AR, Lenna and husband, Steven Rippy, of Batesville, AR, Jamison Woods, deceased, of Nashville, TN, and Betsy Bridges, of Nashville, TN. He leaves step-grandchildren, Isaac and Eva Woods of Nashville, TN and Luella and James Rippy of Batesville, AR.
Sam was an avid bowhunter and enjoyed hunting in Arkansas and Colorado with friends. He also competed in archery tournaments and earned many archery trophies and awards. He enjoyed gardening and just being out in nature.
Everyone who met Sam liked him. He was very kind, and loving, especially with his step-grandchildren, to whom he was known as “Poppy” or “Sam”.
Funeral services and visitation will be at Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. Burial will be at Fayetteville National Cemetery. Date and time are pending.
