Charlene died shortly before midnight after saying goodbye to many friends and family who stayed by her side marveling at her incredible fortitude, will to live, zest for life and "my glass is brimming to the top" attitude.
Char was born in Lenoir, N.C., the youngest child of Estle and Gladys Fox (Bowman). She was a devoted mother, excellent teacher, and a spirited and superb friend. She held a master's degree in education and for 34 years taught special education, upper elementary, and reading for Rockford Public Schools. She was recognized by her peers as an excellent teacher who made a difference in the lives of many, many children. She had a generous heart and strived to be fair as a friend, as a mother and as a teacher. In all her roles, her expectations were high and she demanded respect. Her taste was epicurean and her enjoyment of life was a testament to all who strive to be a positive force in the daily lives of those they love. And a positive force she was; her passing leaves a giant hole in the universe of our lives.
Charlene is survived by her son, Patrick Phillips; friend, lover, husband (ex), Leigh Knudson; brothers, Jerry (Ellen), DeLon (Carol) Fox; sisters, Sandy (Jim) Reinbolt, Alice Fox (Ron Holm). Predeceased by parents, Gladys and Estle and nephew Richard Williams.
