Rear Admiral Washburn W Maynard was born inin Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee in 1844 and entered the united States Naval Academy in 1862.

In 1870 he went to Newport with Captain E. O. Mathews to negotiate the purchase of the Torpedo Station in Newport harbour for the Government. Here he met Mary Elizabeth Brooks, the daughter of Harriet and the Rev. Charles T. Brooks. His evening calls, according to story, were discouraged by Rev. Brooks, who provided only a limited amount of fire wood hoping to shorten the visits. undaunted, Lt. Maynard began to arrive with a stick or two of his own wood to keep the fire replenished. He and Bessie brooks were married in Newport in 1871.

In 1872 he was sent to Alaska on a survey mission but his ship was wrecked off Vancouver.

In 1876 he was sent to St. Augustine, Florida, accompanied this time by his wife and two sons, to survey the St. Johns River.

After tour of duty in Wasinton, D. C. and at the Torpedo Station in Ne, he was chosen by Captain Mathews to accompany him around the world as his Executive Officer on the "USS Brooklyn." Taken seriously ill in Japan, he was operated on for a liver absess and sent home to recover.
