Our Mother, Hazel P. Scott, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 2019. Our family celebrated Mother's passing on Friday, July 12 at the Bradley Hadley Funeral Home. Many friends shared with us in remembering our Mother's life here on earth for 97 years and rejoicing in the fact that she is now inhabiting the Mansion Jesus has been preparing for her beginning that many years ago. Jesus said "in my Father's house are many mansions...I am going there to prepare a place for you". (Our Mother)
You may be asking, do we really believe all that has been said and promised in the Bible? Without hesitation or any apology we say absolutely! Mother believed all that was said in Scripture. She taught us at an early age to believe also. Mother sang or hummed a lot as she worked around the house. Her favorite songs were hymns about Jesus.
The best way we can describe our Mother would be to say she characterized the nine fruits of the spirit found in Galatians Chapter 5: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, humility and self-control.
Mom was blessed with a wonderful husband. Some of you may remember our Dad as Scotty. Our Dad's parents asked our Dad to wait until he was 21 to get married. Three days after turning 21 he and Mom were married! Our Mother was the youngest teacher in Henry County, just 17. She taught at Freedom School which is still standing just East of Clinton. We smile when we think of Dad "courting Miss McLain and how the school children must have enjoyed their courtship! Mother always laughed when she said Dad came along and ruined her career.
We three children, Larry, Lenny and Sandra have been blessed beyond measure to have had parents who loved and respected one another for 67 years.
Mother and Dad had six granddaughters. Jane, Susan, Tara, Joie, Angela, and Halley. They had 16 Great Grandchildren and two Great Great Grandchildren!
The Granddaughters grew up hearing bed time stories from Grandma about our dogs named Bullet and Inky. The excitement of each "made up story" must have worn them out because it never failed to put them asleep.
As a homemaker Mother enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, canning, preparing three meals every day which she did not consider a chore. Mother said it was a blessing and a responsibility. Just ask the granddaughters that learned some of their Grandma Hazel's cooking skills—especially homemade noodles and pies.
Not many people know that Mother once prepared a meal for a lady once a week for a year. She prepared enough it would last several meals. Dad would deliver the meal. Mother and Dad did this for a full year before the lady's death occurred. You can't really speak of Mother's deeds without mentioning Dad because they were such a team. They invited a widow lady into their home for two weeks while her house was being repaired.
Mom was a "room Mother" as they used to call it for all three of us children, a baseball Mom for more years than we can count and a Camp Fire leader. We all went together as a family to Sunday School and Church on Sundays. Those were precious and memorable growing up days!
Family, as well as many many friends through the years, enjoyed sitting with Mom on her porch swing. She always served refreshments or at least wanted to. Mother was a great listener, offered good counsel and always sent you away feeling better than when you came. She was a joy!
Mother loved life. She was always interested in our activities. When I told Mom Tuesday that Tom was spraying for ants she looked at her Encyclopedias and said maybe there would be an articles in there that would help. She appreciated education and said "you can learn something every day".
Though Mother had all she needed without glamour and glitz she had what counts most and that was contentment. Contentment within herself and within the confines of her home with family and friends.
Mother graced a farm house and forty acres for more than half of her life. However, when her possessions were sized down to one room and a few drawers of necessities she was still the most content person we have ever known.
Mother embraced the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all they mind. The second greatest is "love thy neighbor as thyself." In turn she blessed her family and friends abundantly.
There will be a void here on earth without Mother but how can we be selfish when we know Mother is living in a Mansion that Jesus prepared for her beginning 97 years ago!
Our Father preceded Mother's death in March, 2006. Larry and Georgie, Lenny and Dinah, and Sandra and Tom all live in the Clinton area.
