For twelve seasons (1993 to 2004 and 2005 to 2006), he played as a center in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators. Johnson made his initial impact at the University of North Dakota, where he became the school's all-time scoring leader. Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2nd round of the 1989 NHL Amateur Draft, he totaled 785 career regular season games and compiled 145 goals, with 224 assists. He was chosen by Nashville during the NHL Expansion Draft in 1998 and held the distinction as being on the Predators inaugural roster (1998 to 1999). Additionally, he went on to serve as team captain (2002 to 2006). His younger brother Ryan Johnson also became an NHL player.
