Actor. Best known for playing the roll of Jonathan "Pa" Kent in the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman which ran on ABC from 1993 to 1997. Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, he hitchhiked to California and was working in a gas station when he was spotted by a casting agent. His first television guest role was in a 1958 episode of Young Doctor Malone. He returned to the East Coast where he was Charles Durning's understudy in the original 1972 Broadway production of That Championship Season. He appeared in over 250 theater productions, including Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? and Death of a Salesman for which he won a L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of Willy Loman. He appeared in 78 television series, television movies, and box office movies from 1978 to 2018. His most memorable roles include Dave Hooch, the father of the awkward Rockford Peach ballplayer Marla in 1992's A League of Their Own; Clark Kent's father in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman; and Samuel Riddle, the owner of War Admiral and Man o' War in the 2003 film Seabiscuit.
