Henrietta Elizabeth Lawrence, 83, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. She was born on August 27, 1935, to the late Elizabeth “Tootsie” Welch and Henry Toliver. She is also preceded in death by her husband, William Ray Lawrence; sisters, Betty Hickenbotham and Lavenia Ritchie and step-son, David Jones.
“Red” graduated from Lucy Addison High School and attended Bluefield State College. She worked for Total Action against Poverty (TAP), the Roanoke Housing Authority and Virginia Beach General Hospital. Furthermore, serving as a member of the Little Piney Grove Church of Virginia Beach, VA.
Returning to Roanoke after the death of her husband, Ms. Lawrence spent the next 11 years of her life looking out for the welfare of her family and friends and serving the Lord as a member of her church, Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church of Boones Mill, VA.
She is survived by her sons, Samuel and Henry Davis; daughter-in-law, Lenora Seel Davis; one grandchild, Breanna Davis; two sisters, Mary Louise Otey and Charlene Toliver; brother-in-laws, Edward Hickenbotham and Houston Otey, Sr.; one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Martha Welch; nieces and nephews, April Hickenbotham, Charlotte and Dores Welch, Houston Otey, Jr. and Toney Otey; cousins, Dennis and Jeanette Hoggard and Audrey Rawlings, Calvin Smith, Leon Jones, Deborah Harris, Edna Basham, John Ferguson, Brenda Lewis and Gloria Bound; step-sons, Ray Lawrence, Jr. and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2019, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Boones Mill, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
