Steve was born September 4, 1948 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Dwain and Mary Ann (McNabb) Henry.
He was raised in Pearl City along with his brother, Jim, and sister, Judy. Steve served in the United States Army during Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism. One of his battalion’s trucks carrying ammunition hit a mine and exploded. The Bronze Star Award announcement reads, “With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Henry evacuated an injured comrade to safety. Although receiving burns, Specialist Henry continued to help the medics give first aid to the other wounded men. His valorous actions were responsible for saving a man’s life.” Steve never told this story.
After his military service, Steve settled in Chadwick, Illinois. He began working at Handle Implement in 1971 and remained employed as a mechanic until his retirement from Birkey’s in 2015. He was very knowledgeable in the repair and maintenance of Internantional Harvesters.
Steve will be dearly missed by his son, John (Sharon) Henry and several nieces, nephews and good friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and a son, Joel Burton Henry.
