Services for athlete Renita Cheryl Smith, 28, of East San Diego, will be held 1 p.m. today in St. Stephen's Church of God In Christ, under direction of California Cremation and Burial Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Ms. Smith collapsed Tuesday in her East San Diego home and was rushed to San Diego General Hospital, where she died.

She was a high school athlete and was an award-winning member of Mickey's Missiles, a San Diego track team. She won many awards in sprints. She also was a member of the mile-relay team.

She was born in 1962 in Arkansas, but the family moved to San Diego when she was one year old.

She attended San Diego schools, including Morse High School. She graduated from Crawford High School.

She was a clerk for Sav-On Drug company and also worked for the San Diego court system, but her major interest was in athletics. She was an active member of St. Stephen's Church of God In Christ and its neighborhood programs. She was a member of St. Stephen's Youth Choir.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharita Marie and Angelica Denise Smith; her parents, Fred and Erma Stancil of San Diego; two sisters and a brother, Sharon Smith of Sherman Oaks, and Debra White and Christopher Clark, both of San Diego.
