Charity was the daughter of William Estridge and Sophia Fender. She married Sam Morgan (common-law) and Elisha Young.
Notation on Elisha's pension file dated 3/27/1895 says the pension office received a letter from Elijah Peters saying that pensioner (Charity) has died. It's unclear whether 3/27 is the date of Charity's death, the date of the letter, or the date the pension office received the letter. She is very likely buried in a space on either side of Elisha which has no headstone.

Children of Elisha Young and Charity Estridge:
1.Polly b 6-26-1859 d 4-27-1940 Clay County, KY, listed as Mary 1880 census; Child with Fredrick Ponder; married Green Hubbard 8-12-1880 Clay She is buried on Hubbard Fork in southerm Clay County (precise location unknown). She is found 1900 Jackson (Horse Lick), 1910 Garrard (Paint Lick), 1920 Clay (Laurel Creek), 1930 Clay (Hogskin Rd) with sister-in-law Nancy Hubbard (both listed as widows), 1940 Clay (Manchester) with granddaughter Nannie and her husband Loyd Dezarn (Listed as widowed). One source says Green Hubbard died 1926 Laurel County.

2.Nancy b 11-14-1864 d 10-21-1942 Tulsa, OK m Francis F. Anderson 8/23/1883 Jackson County, KY. Virtually all other records give his name as Francis M, name on tombstone is Francis Marion, he is sometimes shown as Frank. Francis was born 5-1865 and died in Tulsa, OK 12/21/1945. Both are buried in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Tulsa. They moved to Arkansas between 1889 and 1892, then to Oklahoma between 1906 and 1910. Found 1900 Madison County, AR. 1910 Mayes County, OK, 1920 and 1930 Cherokee County, OK.

3.Sally b 10-14-1868 d 12-1-1957 m 4-1-1885 Jackson to Elijah Peters b 7-3-1866 d 3-6-1945 (son of Samuel Peters & ?); they ran a grocery in Oklahoma City, OK, lived 827 NW 17th Street; both buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Okla City

The William age 15 in household in 1870 is surely Wilson (Charity's child with Sam Morgan). William Lewis 17 in household 1880, listed as servant

There is a child, Henry age 4, in Charity and Elisha's 1880 Househol;d, listed as a son. This is an apparent error. Best evidence indicates Henry is a grandson, Polly's son with Fredrick Ponder. Vital Statistics were kept for Clay County in 1876. There is no entry for Charity. However, There is a listing for Henry Young born 1 Jan 1876, parents Fredrick Ponder and Mary Young. Frederick Ponder married Elizabeth Webb 20 Apr 1876 ‑ Clay county. The error is compounded in the 1900 census. The 1900 listing for Green and Mary's household has Hubbard, Henry, son , b May 1884; Young, James M. stepson, b. Jan 1876; Young, Beverly, nephew, b. Apr 1884. According,to a grandson of James M., the 1900 census should read: Young, Henry, stepson, b. Jan 1876; Hubbard, James M., son, b May 1884 (Beverly Young ‑ is the son of W. S. Young, per same source). This is consistent with James Madison Hubbard's age in later censuses. Henry apparently died between 1900 and 1910 because: 1900 – Polly, 3 children/2 living; 1910 ‑ Polly, 3 children/ 1 living. James M is accounted for (he died in 1955). Also, 1910 – Felix Hubbard, born abt 1903, listed as son (of Polly and Green); 1920 – Felix Burns, age 16, servant, in their household. (The story is that Felix Burns was an adopted child)

Charity's occupation given as 'spinner' in 1860. In a pension depositon, Elisha gives hs occupation as 'minister of the gospel'. Charity and Elisha were founding members of the Brown Mission Christain Church at Laurel Creek, Clay County, KY.
The record of Charity's marriage to Elisha are very garbled. The record in Perry County Vitals is very puzzling, two entries:
Feb 19, 1857 Elisha Young 20 to Charity Esinberg 24
June 28, 1857 Elisha Young 25 to Charity Stacey 25 born Ashe County NC **
However, the original handwritten marriage return dated June 28, 1857 gives her name as Charity Estareg, both aged 25, 1st marriage for both, he born Perry County, she born Ashe County, NC. This is the definitive record. Admittedly the surname is hard to read and might be interpreted as Esinberg, but could not be interpreted as Stacey.
Assuming his age on the marriage record is correct, he was born 1832. To add to the confusion, Silas Williams in a pension deposition said they were married at his house Sept 1858 (not 1857).Deposition of Eli Estridge gives same date and place. Charity in widow's pension application says she was married under the name Estridge. To quote Jess Wilson (Research Paper #36): "However, she had to be both Charity Eisenburg and Charity Stacy for she was the only female in Perry County that had a first name of Charity. I know. Before I knew anything about the marriage I looked through the entire 1860 census looking for a Charity. She was the only Charity I found . As she had married a Young, she was on the last page. At least she could have married an Abner or a Brown and I would not have to look through the entire census"
Other than this entry there is no reason to believe that Charity married a Stacy, legally or common-law. One transcription of the 1860 Perry County census (Mrs. John O Johnson for the Perry County Genealogical Society) Elisha Young household, Green and Wilson are listed with the surname of Stacy. However, the original of the census lists their surname as Young. There are three Stacy families close to William Estridge (#36) in 1850 Perry: #2 Calvin Stacy30 & Phoebe, #11 Felix Stacy 23 and Cynthia 23 including Calvin 21, and #15 Sally Stacy 40 including Ben 16 and Elicha 19.

Elisha was a private Co I 8th KY Infantry and lost his right arm at Chicamunga Creek, GA (the 8th was in very heavy fighting at Murfressboro and Chatanooga, one unit planted flag atop Lookout Mtn). Elisha was wounded 9-19-1863 and breifly held prisoner after being wounded (he was paroled 9-29-1863 at Chatanooga.). He was discharged 4-6-1864 at Nashville, TN.
Elisha is buried Swindlin Gap Cemetery, High Knob, Jackson County, KY. His tombstone reads:
E Young borned Dec 28, 1840 murdered by John Robinson Feb 11, 1891 . According to Jess Wilson: One day in February 1891, Elisha went across Swindling Gap into a fork of Robinson Creek in Clay County and was having a snort of corn whiskey at a country store when a quarrel broke out and Elisha was killed.

Conceivably Elisha iYoung was a brother to Thomas who married Rebecca, more likely he is a first cousin.* Elisha and Thomas are adjacent 1860 Perry and 1870 Clay.. Elisha is surely a grandson of Thomas Young and Elizabeth Hughes, but his parents are unclear. Elisha age 12 (b 1838), is in the household of James Young 20 and Emelene Caudill 17 in 1850 Perry. Annotation says James and Emelene were married within the year. James is in the same house #194 (but different household) as Thomas Young b 1781 and Elizabeth (and Elizabeth is in James 1860 household). Isaac Young is two houses away (#196), along with Thomas (age 3) who married Charity's sister Rebecca. Isaac is known to be a son of Thomas Young b 1781 KY and Elizabeth b 1782 PA. Since James is only 8 years older than Elisha it is not possible that they are father and son. These ages are consistent with later censuses. James appears to be a son of Thomas Young because Louisa Fields, niece, is found in his 1880 Breathitt household. Louisa is the daughter of Sarah Fields, who is a daughter of Thomas. Elisha could not be a son of Thomas and brother of James, unless illegitimate, given Elizabeth's age. It's unlikely that Elisha is a son of Isaac Young since Polly would only be 13 when he was born if you accept the 1838 birth year (she would be 15 if he were born 1840 like his tombstone says). A very good candidate for Elisha's father is Nathan Young born circa 1805 VA d before 1850 m Lucy Fields. (According to the Fields family, Lucy had 2 children, Henry and Mary, by Henry Combs. Lucy and Henry were not married. Their son, Henry, was recognized by Perry County Court as an illegimate son of Henry Combs. Lucy married Nathan Young and had several children. Fields family do not list Elisha as one of Lucy and Nathan's children. Lucy was cited in 1851 Perry County Court for running a "bawdy house.")
