He married Martha Pritchett; bond 14Aug 1844.

Joseph joined the CSA on 1March 1862 at age 41, in Company F, 6th Infantry. Captured at Rappahannock Station Virginia 7Nov 1863, arrived in Washington D.C. on Nov. 11;Transported to Hammid Hospital in Jan. 8, 1864 at Point Lookout Maryland where he died as a POW.

His brother-in-law, William Rudy May enlisted in the CSA the same day. He died 16Feb 1864 in a military prison of smallpox. 22103682

Sister: Mary Ann, married William May: this WIlliam was a bondsman for Nancy who married Martin Kellam in Feb. 1848 in Guilford. This Nancy was most likely sister to Joseph and Mary Ann.

Grave for Joseph's daughter Emily Whiteley has not yet been located.

Also not listed, daughter Nancy had a child, Luberta who died 2/1880 of whooping cough. Another child, John A, born~ 1871 has not yet been located
