Mr. Robert Jerl “Bob” Keene, at the age of 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Wysor Valley, Honaker, Virginia, surrounded by his family and friends on Friday night (July 5, 2019). He was born in Honaker, Virginia on January 17, 1929 to the late Dock and Ethel Smith Keene.
Mr. Keene owned and operated his own trucking company as a very young man. He married Helen Jean Dye on September 2, 1950 and they had three children. They resided in the Honaker area most of their lives. He was baptized on October 28, 1990 at the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church by Rev. Robert M. Simmons, and he attended the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in Wysor Valley. He was very active in the community. He had served many years on the Russell County Board of Supervisors, as well as the Russell County Social Services Board. He was a member of the Pruner Masonic Lodge 254 since 1953, as well as a member of the Shriners. His main objective in life was to work hard, take care of his family and maintain his home. He wasn’t happy if he didn’t have some sort of job to do. After the decline of his health, he commented that the hardest thing he had ever done was nothing! He instilled a very strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren. His motto was The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.
Robert “Bob” Keene was preceded in death by his parents, Dock and Ethel Keene; two brothers, Harold Keene and Lawrence Keene and one sister, JoAnn Ritchie; brothers-in-law, Louis Runyon, Charles Fogelman, Frank Ritchie and William B. Dye.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of sixty-nine years, Helen Jean Dye Keene; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Diane and Bill Hale of Honaker, Virginia; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall Jerl and Amanda Hale Keene of Honaker, Virginia and Richard Keith and Teresa Wyatt Keene of Ray City, Georgia; two sisters, Margaret Runyon of Abingdon, Virginia and Sue Fogelman of Lebanon, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Keene and Arbutus Keene both of Lebanon, Virginia and Narcie Dye of Honaker, Virginia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Earl and Patty Dye of Honaker, Virginia; twelve grandchildren, Sonya Acevedo, Heather Jackson, Rodd Keene, Brad Keene, Derrick Keene, Joshua Hale, Shawntay Thomas, David Keene, Cameron Keene, Corey Keene, Keaton Keene and Carey Keene. He is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to extend thanks and gratitude to the very special caregivers, Evonne Perkins and Linda Dye, as well as to Donna Breeding and Samantha Lane of the Home Nursing Company and the entire Home Nursing Hospice team and to C-Health staff members and the staff of Regional Cancer Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon, Virginia.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Sunday at Honaker Funeral Home, where an evening song service and Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 PM. Masonic Rites will be given by the members of Pruner Masonic Lodge.
