Following his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, he crushed the Sudanese dervishes and avenged the death of General Gordon and established British control in the Sudan. In the early stages of the South African war he assisted Lord Roberts and took over command himself in 1900. He helped moderate the terms of Boer surrender in 1902.
