Race Car Driver. A NASCAR race pioneer, he raced in the Grand National Series from 1956 to 1959 and in the Convertible Series from 1957 to 1959. Born in Yadkin County, North Carolina, he began racing stock cars in the Grand National Series in 1956 at the age of 30. His first race in his #46 1955 Chevrolet was a dirt track race, theWilkes County 160 at the North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He finished a respectable tenth place, competing against racing legends Lee Petty, Buck Baker, Fireball Roberts and Junior Johnson. He would start 13 Grand National races in 1957, finishing once in the top 5 and four times in the top 10. He placed second at the Langhorne Speedway in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, losing out to NASCAR legend Curtis Turner. The same year he began racing in the NASCAR Convertible Series which had been recently purchased from the Society of Auto Sports, Fellowship, and Education, and was often a mixture of convertibles and hard tops racing in the same race. He ran 27 races that year in a 1956 Ford Convertible at Daytona Beach; Darlington Raceway; Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Charlotte Motor Speedway; Martinsville Speedway, and many other race tracks. He placed in the top 10 in sixteen races. In 1958 he ran nine Grand National races and eight Convertible Series races, placing fourth in two Grand Natonal races at Martinsville Speedway and the Gastonia Fairgrounds in Gastonia, North Carolina, and three top 10 finishes in the Convertible series. 1959 was his final year of racing in the Grand Nationals and Convertible series. He ran 6 Grand National races and three Convertible races. He turned to racing Modified Cars in the early 1960s and would eventually win nine races at Bowman Gray Stadium.
