Willie (BoJim) James Helm Newman, 76, was born March 29, 1943 in Ebenezer, Mississippi to Maggie Helm-Lacy and Earl Newman, Sr. He departed this life on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Willie married to Gloria McCool-Newman, on January 10, 2007 in Springfield, IL.

Willie was educated in Holmes County Schools in Lexington, Mississippi.

Willie accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Ebenezer, Mississippi. Willie migrated to Springfield, Illinois. During his life in Springfield, he joined Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Charles W. Tiner, Sr. He was an active member of the Usher Ministry.

Willie worked as a part time employee at the 6thStreet Car Wash for 50 years. He worked at Great Northern Equipment for 10 years. Willie retired from Altorfer Inc. after 30 years of employment as a painter.

Willie enjoyed his life which included working on cars, traveling, scraping materials, watching wrestling, and old western movies. He also liked to relax by sitting on the front porch. Willie spent peaceful moments of his life attending to his cows in Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie Helm-Lacy and Earl Newman, Sr.; one son, Melvin Gibson; one daughter, Melody Newman; four brothers, Jessie Lacy, Willie Lacy, John Lewis Lacy, and Nathaniel Lacy; three sisters, Lezola Lacy, Lucille Lacy, and Daisy Brown.

He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Gloria McCool-Newman; step-mother, Mae Jessie Newman, Ebenezer, MS; five sons, Willie Earl Gibson, Chicago, IL; Jessie Earl (Connie) Newman, Jackson, MS; Mark (Cynthia) Newman, Springfield, IL; Dion (Kelli) Smith, Arlington, WA; Charles (Mary) Newman, Springfield, IL; stepson, Ervin Streeter Jr., Springfield, IL; daughter, Sandra Newman-Pettis, Lexington, MS; stepdaughter, Felicia McCool, Springfield, IL; four brothers, H.B. Lacy, Ebenezer, MS; Earl (Barbara) Newman, Timothy (Kim) and Roy (Jackie) Newman, all of Springfield, IL; nine sisters, Delois Brown, Springfield, IL; Margaret Davis, Chicago, IL; Irene Lacy, Springfield, IL; Maple Temple, Chicago, IL; Irene Raghe, Atlanta, GA; Alice (Harry) Hayes, Springfield, IL; Shirley Billingslea, Lexington, KY; Annette Newman, Palatine, IL; Debra (Argilea)Taylor, Arlington, TN; brother-in-law, Floyd Brown, Milwaukee, WI; twenty-one grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
