Clarence Earl “Phil” Phillips died peacefully in the company of family on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at his home at St. James Place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 89 years.
Earl was born on April 10, 1927, in Kelly, Louisiana and graduated from Kelly High School in 1944.
Upon graduating, he attended Louisiana State University for a short period before entering the Army. He served a tour of duty in Europe before being discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1947 and returning to LSU where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950.
Some 40 years of Earl’s professional career were spent working in the aluminum reduction industry. This fit in well with his and his wife June’s love for traveling. They accepted assignments in Louisiana, West Virginia, Washington State, and California, as well as Ghana – West Africa, Germany, and Wales – United Kingdom. After retiring in 1989, Earl continued to work on aluminum reduction special projects, which took him to a number of countries in Europe, as well as to Canada, Russia, Egypt, Ghana – West Africa, and Venezuela. In 1992, Earl retired again. At that time, he and June moved from California to Mandeville, Louisiana, where Earl enjoyed his lifelong hobbies of hunting and fishing, and the couple continued to be active playing bridge with friends, visiting with family, and travelling to favorite locations.
Earl was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, June Wester Phillips, who passed away one year ago; his parents, Ray A. Phillips, Sr. and Birdie Hudson Phillips; his brother Ray A Phillips, Jr., and his sister, Juanita Phillips Brinsmade.
He is survived by his brother Maxwell H. Phillips of Keller, Texas, a number of nieces, nephews, and in-laws, and numerous friends.
