Character Actor. In a career spanning seven decades, Benjamin appeared in dozens of films and television shows. The youngest of 12 children, he made his first appearance on film as a bartender in 1969's 'Midnight Cowboy.' Among other films he would appear in were 'The Anderson Tapes' (1971), 'Across 110th Street' (1972), 'Distance' (1975), 'Escape from Alcatraz' (1979), 'Some Kind of Hero' (1982), 'Nuts' (1987), 'Do the Right Thing' (1989), 'The Five Heartbeats' (1991), 'Drop Squad' (1994), 'Hoodlum' (1997), 'Stanley's Gig' (2000), 'Back in the Day' (2005) and 'Occupy, Texas' (2016). On television he would have roles in such series and made-for-TV movies as 'l Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' 'In The Heat of the Night,' 'ER,' 'Law & Order' and 'The Shield.'
