Laura Ellen Alley passed away peacefully on June 28, 2019 at the age of ninety-six.

She was born in Bancroft, Idaho on February 19, 1923 to Henrietta Johnson and George Alley.

Laura had been active in the nursing profession since she served in the Army Nurse Corps during the last years of World War II. Wherever she went as a nurse, she was recognized for her skills.

She was both a fine teacher and an excellent manager, demonstrated by her rise to the position of Assistant Director at LDS Hospital, and later to the position of Associate Professor of Nursing for BYU. While employed by BYU, she taught multiple nursing courses, including leadership training and care for individuals with complex health problems. Her superior teaching was recognized by the Utah Nurses Association for her outstanding work in nursing education.

She received a diploma during the WWII years from the LDS Hospital School of Nursing. That diploma was followed by a B.S.N degree and a M.S.N. degree from the University of Utah. Her educational interests continued after her graduate degrees, working in areas ranging from pediatric topics to consulting and service for gerontology clinics.

Although Laura, lovingly nicknamed “Peggy,” had no children her own, she spent countless resources on an extended family of nephews, nieces, cousins, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces. Three generations of family adore her and feel like there will be a hole in their lives. She was respected, loved, and emulated by all who knew her.

One of the greatest compliments to her is that there are several women and girls in the family who bear her name. She reached out to neighbors and friends and made them part of that family as well. Everywhere she went, people knew “Aunt Peg” and felt privileged to be associated with her in any capacity. Even as her health declined, clerks and tradesmen would often run after her and tell her how glad they were to see her.

Her interests ranged from harmonicas to playing basketball. She was a natural athlete and engaged in sports “for fun” rather than for exercise. When she could no longer play, her appetite for watching her teams on TV was almost insatiable. She loved especially University of Utah sports and rooted for them and against anyone who played them.

Aunt Peggy also loved music and theater of all sorts. She had season tickets to the symphony, and ballet for years. She bought season tickets on the second row of Pioneer Memorial Theater when it first opened and every year since. To say that she will be greatly missed is an understatement.
