Professional Sports Owner, Real Estate Developer, Philanthropist. He was the second owner of the National Football League's (NFL) Seattle Seahawks from 1988 to 1997. During his ownership, the Seahawks compiled a record of 61 wins and 83 losses. In February 1996, he attempted to move the Seahawk franchise to Los Angeles, California following a two win 14 loss season. The move came after a failed attempt to obtain building approval for a new stadium from the City of Seattle, to replace the existing Kingdome facility. His attempted move to Southern California was met with fierce opposition by fellow NFL owners, forcing Behring to return player and workout equipment previously shipped to the Los Angeles area, back to Seattle. Faced with increasing financial losses, he sold the franchise to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in June 1997 for an estimated $200 million dollars. Prior to arriving in Seattle, he was a major real estate developer in both California and Florida. In 1992 he was inducted as an honoree into the California Homebuilding Foundation. He served as a former president to the American Academy of Achievement, and in 1988 he helped create the Blackhawk Museum, showcasing a personal collection of his vintage car collection. In 2000 he created the nonprofit Wheelchair Foundation providing over one million wheelchairs to people in need in over 155 countries, and was a major benefactor to the University of California. He was the author of "The Road to Leadership: Finding a Life of Purpose." He spent his final years in the San Francisco Bay area, active in developing senior retirement projects.
