Mr. Grissom was born in Vance County on December 23, 1925, to the late Nora Ayscue Grissom and Martin Luther Grissom and was married to Caroline Lancaster Grissom for sixty-five years before her death in 2011.
Mr. Grissom was a retired farmer and tobacconist. He was a lifelong member of Liberty Christian Church where he served in numerous capacities. He was a Master Mason and was a past Master of John H. Mills # 624, where he was a member for over seventy years. He was a Navy veteran where he served in the Pacific Theater during WW II.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2019, at 11: 00 a.m., at Liberty Christian Church, 7818 NC 39 Hwy South, Henderson, NC, conducted by the Rev. Caroline Allen and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery,
Surviving are two daughters, Janice G. Pritchard (John), Miriam G Creech (Bruce), and a son, John L. Grissom Jr. (Debbie), a sister, Dorothy G. Jefferson; grandchildren, Casey Purdy (Jason), Mandy Bien (Thomas III), Jason Grissom (Dana) J. Lee Grissom III (Katie), Amy Grissom, Stephen Parker, Sara Grissom, and MaryCaroline Webb (Cory); great-grandchildren, Meredith Purdy, Eleanor Purdy, Thomas Bien IV, Emma Bien, Silas Grissom, Joy Grissom, and Claire Grissom; and special family members Phil and Pam Grissom, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and devoted caregiver Mary Tart. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Ruth G. Gooch, Margaret G. Benton, Ava G. Swain, Frances G. Hoyle, Madge G. Benton, and Emma G. Hoyle, and five brothers, Raymond Grissom, Tracy Grissom, William Grissom, Martin Grissom Jr. and George Grissom.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be, Lee Grissom, Stephen Parker, Philip Grissom Sr., Philip Grissom Jr., Scott Lawrence and Brandon Lawrence. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the John H. Mills Masonic Lodge # 624.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Christian Church Cemetery Fund or to the Lowell A. Smoot Scholarship Fund c/o Mattie May 1867 Epsom Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, NC 27537.
