Background and Family in Mississippi
Jack Billie Marks was born in Tylertown Mississippi on May 28th, 1940 and the eighth child to Ado and Lilly Mark. Young Jack was always a hard worker and at the tender age of fifteen years old set the cotton picking record for Walthal County, Mississippi by picking 412 pounds a cotton in one day. This desire to work hard would prove to be invaluable as a teenager and later in life. After his mother Lilly passed, Jack was left as the oldest son in the house and began driving a school bus in order to help take care of his brothers and sisters.

Education and Early Work
After high school, Jack attended Alcorn University/College where he studied Social Science and dreamt of becoming an educator. To offset the cost of college, where he received a partial scholarship for basketball, Jack worked in the Dining Hall and picked up side jobs. After graduation, Jack wanted to teach and/or counsel, but found the opportunities in Mississippi to be quite limited.

Moving from Mississippi to New York
In order to find pursue his dream of teaching and counseling, as well as finding a better way to support himself and his family in Mississippi, Jack moved from Tylertown Mississippi to New York City in 1964. While in New York, he lived with his sister Eva and her husband Bill Bentley. He later found work at New York University Hospital.

Relationship with Julia Oliver and Start of a Family
Just a couple of years after his move to the New York, he met his future wife, Julia “Poopie” Oliver. After dating for some time, they decided to marry. The couple lived in the Bronx, NY, and was soon blessed by their firstborn, Steven, followed three years later by their second son, Corey, and three years after that by their third son, Bryant. The Marks family moved to Queens Village, NY in the summer of 1972. A few years later, Sean, the son of Jack’s sister Mary, moved in with the Marks family and effectively became the fourth son.

Call to the Ministry
After settling in Queens, Jack and the family became members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Jack served as a Deacon, then in1977, he was ordained to preach the gospel. Just a few years later, and with the guidance and blessing of God, Jack was selected to be Pastor St. John Missionary Church located in Inwood, NY. While Pastor at St. John, Rev. Marks served on the local school board and started a local mentorship program. He garnered the support of twelve other local ministers and they provided guidance and counseling to young black males in the community. In 1997, after serving as Pastor at St. John for seventeen years, Jack and Julia relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. The original intent was to move from the Big Apple to relax and take it easy in the South. However, God was not through with Jack just yet. Just three years after moving to Atlanta, Georgia, Jack was selected as Pastor of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Pastor for eleven years. Rev.
