Walter Coleman Jr was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Odile (or Odele?) Coleman and Walter Coleman Sr. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the tender age of 17 and served in the Korean War. Walter was part of the All Black 24th Infantry Regiment. Walter was a teletype operator and was proud of this assignment because he landed this job by testing high on an entrance exam coming into the armed forces. Walter received the baptism of the Holy Ghost with speaking in tongues while he was in the army.
When Walter completed his four years of service in the Army, he ended up in Chicago, Illinois where he met and married Gwendolyn Ford in 1954. Eleven children were born from this Union. Walter worked for the Chicago Transit Authority, Gary Public Transportation, Cherry Creek School District, and Crown Plaza Hotel. Walter officially retired in 2017 from all forms of work and enjoyed driving around town, interacting with his children and grandchildren, taking himself to movies, and sitting in the sun. Walter was a highly intelligent man who had a constant thirst for knowledge and studied two foreign languages: Spanish and Korean. Walter was often found reading and studying the Bible. He had an impressive collection of books.
Walter and his family moved from Chicago, Illinois to Gary, Indiana where he started a church called Indiana Apostolic Faith Church. Walter pastored his flock for several years prior to relocating to Denver, Colorado. Walter served as assistant pastor to the late Elder Thomas for a few years and alternately became a member of Bethesda Temple where he was a tithe paying member until his transition to his heavenly home. Walter took pleasure in teaching his grandchildren the bible through weekly bible studies.
Those who preceded Walter in death are; Gwendolyn Fiord Coleman (wife), Sheila Johnson (daughter), Marilyn Coleman (daughter), Nanette Coleman (daughter), Walter Coleman Sr. (father), Odile Coleman (mother), and Georgiana Kemp (sister).
