US Congressman. A lawyer, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1844, and served a term as Lehigh County District Attorney. When Congressman Thomas B. Cooper died suddenly in June 1862, he elected as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy, serving two terms from June 3, 1862 to March 4, 1865. In 1868 he was again elected to Congress, this time representing Pennsylvania's 7th District, serving a single term from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871. He declined to run again for the seat, and it was then taken by Congressman Ephraim L. Acker. Three times he served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention – 1854, 1864, and 1868. After the expiration of his second Congressional stint he returned to his law practice in Allentown, where he passed away in 1896.
