Douglas was born in Salem, Oregon to Herbert and Ruth (Darby) Barker. He spent his first few years living in Salem with his family. When his parents divorced, he lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon, with his mother, brother, half sister and stepfather, William Raymond. He attended Mills grade school, Altamont Junior High and Klamath Union High School graduating in 1949. Sports had a large role during high school. He played football, basketball and was a star on the track team. He met his first wife, Betty Vahl, in high school. They were married in 1949 in Reno, Nevada. Their daughter was born in 1950. After their divorce, Doug enlisted in the army. Shortly after being discharged, he attended Southern Oregon University, graduating with a teaching degree. He taught school in Salem for many years. Doug married Joan Harris in Reno, Nevada in 1969. He lived most of his life in Salem. His second wife, father, brother, mother and stepfather all preceeded him in death. He is survived by his stepson, Steve, and his half sister, Rosemary. His daughter by his first marriage also survives.
