Granddaughter of Georgia governor Joseph E. Brown who served as governor during the Civil War. She was a devoted member of the Second Baptist Church in Atlanta (later Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church). She taught the Young Business Women's Bible Class at Second Baptist for many years where she influenced an entire generation of young professional women in Atlanta. She was referred to as Mother Spalding by the young women who loved her greatly. The class sponsored the Albert Theodore Spalding Memorial Fund for many years until the ladies turned the fund over to Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist in the 1970's. More specific information on the class and the fund may be available from the church.
The Spaldings lived for a number of years in the family home of her father Dr. E. L. Connally - referred to as "The Homestead". It was located on Ashby Street (now Joseph E. Lowery Blvd.) in the West End section of Atlanta. Following the death of her father, the Spaldings moved to NE Atlanta in 1931 and the house was demolished. It was said that Mrs. Spalding had the house torn down so that no one else would live in her family's home.
