US Congressman. Trained as a lawyer, he established a practice in Allentown after being admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1867. He then served as the Lehigh County District Attorney in 1874 and was in that office during the worker riots in 1877. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania’s 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving two terms from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1897. He declined to run again for the seat, and it was subsequently occupied by Congressman Daniel Ermentrout. He returned to Allentown, where he continued is law practice, and headed several merchant and insurance companies before passing away there in 1911. His grandfather was Congressman Jacob Erdman, who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1847.
