Joseph Thorarinn Thorson, born at Winnipeg, 15 March 1889. Son of Stephen Thorson and Sigridur Thorarinnsdottir, who came to Canada from Iceland in 1887. Married Miss A. Scarth, 30 December 1916. Has one daughter. Was educated at Carleton School, Winnipeg; Winnipeg Collegiate; Manitoba College; New College (Oxford), England. Graduated in Classics (University of Manitoba Silver Medalist) 1910; appointed Rhodes Scholar for Manitoba, 1910. Attended Oxford University, 1910-13; graduated in Jurisprudence, 1912. Called to the Bar of Middle Temple, 1913; called to Manitoba Bar, 1913. Practised law in Winnipeg (McFaden and Thorson) 1913-16; Campbell and Pitblado and Co., 1916-19. On service with C.E.F., Captain 223rd Battalion (Scandinavian); Attached H.Q. 3rd Army, France, November 1917 to January 1919; Officer Commanding No. 4, Prisoners of War Company, France (German) 1919-21. Practised law in Winnipeg (Phillips and Scarth), 1921. Appointed Dean of Manitoba Law School. Member of the Honorable Society of the Middle Temple, London, England. Unitarian. Residence, 129 Niagara Street, Winnipeg.
He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament and Minister of National War Services 1941-1942.
