He was born July 5, 1947, in Columbia, the son of Robert Louis and Elizabeth Suzanne (Beck) Jones.
Robert attended school in Centralia, graduating from Centralia High School in 1965. He attended Linn Technical School in Linn, Missouri before joining the U.S. Army in 1966. He served in Korea as an Engineer, building panel bridges at the DMZ and was also there in 1968 during the Pueblo incident.
