Cumberland—Harold Loyd “Big Mac” McDonald, Sr., 90, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018, at home.

Born in Painesville, Ohio on February 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Hazel L. (Malcolm) and Albert Archie McDonald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kathleen J. (Nield) McDonald, who passed away on June 25, 2011; daughter, Baby Love McDonald; granddaughter, Kaitlyn C. McDonald; sons-in-law, Michael Sheets, and Ronald Hershberger; daughter-in-law, Mary Jean (Moss) McDonald; brothers, Calvin McDonald and wife Joan, Charles McDonald, and Howard McDonald.

Mac was a 1945 graduate of Flintstone High School. He graduated from high school at 16 years of age to permit him to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Iowa. While serving in the Navy, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the Pacific Theater Ribbon. After he was discharged, Mac went to work as lieutenant for the Cumberland Fire Department. He was also employed at Hercules Industries, and later went to work for the Forestry Department for the State of Maryland. He retired from this position as Maintenance Supervisor in 1990.

Mac attended church at the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren, Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, and most recently, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. Mac was a member of the District 16 Volunteer Fire Department, where he had served as Past Chief. He was also a member of the North Branch Canal Preservation Organization, the Henry Hart Post 1411 VFW where he was a life member, and a volunteer of the Finan Center Auxiliary Board. Mac enjoyed hunting, fishing, and he was able to fix almost anything. He was known as Captain Mac because of his fondness for boating. In his lifetime, he had owned many boats that he captained on the Chesapeake Bay.

Mac is survived by his children, Diana L. Taylor, LaVale, Sandra K. Shoemaker and husband Craig, Berkeley Springs, Harold L. “Little Mac” McDonald, Jr. and Ruth Ann Shrewsbury, LaVale, and Kimberly A. Hershberger and husband Steve Liller, Beans Cove; special close friend, Diane Spicer; grandchildren, Michelle Taylor and Rick, Michael Taylor fiancée Sherry, Jason Eyler and Danni, Tara Eyler, Colby Eyler and Kate, Sierra McDonald, Robert Hershberger and wife Kimber, Kenneth Hershberger and wife Kristi, and Laura Scott and husband Garrett; 9 great-grandchildren; great great-granddaughter, Aria Renay; and sisters-in-law, Shirley McDonald Mulligan, Pam Rice McDonald, Betty Lou McDonald, and Shirley McClellan McDonald.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 3-5 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home of Friday at 11 A. M. with Fr. James Watson officiating. Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
