Ephraim Cress was a son of Simon and Catharine Cress. Both parents were born about 1760 in Pennsylvania. In 1806, the year of Ephraim's birth, the family moved to Waterloo Region, Ontario, and lived for a few months near Preston. Simon purchased farmland near St. Jacobs, Ontario, which was eventually passed on to Ephraim.
