Daniel Hoerster, a government cattle brand inspector, was murdered by cattle rustlers during the Mason County War. His grave is accompanied by a Texas State Historical Survey Committee Marker. The marker, shown in photo at right, reads:
DANIEL HOERSTER, CATTLE BRANDS INSPECTOR. KILLED 1875 BY CATTLE RUSTLERS IN MASON COUNTY WAR – A FEUD BETWEEN THE LAW AND THE LAWLESS. Recorded 1967
