Knute Bjornsen Gladem

The Book the House of Gladem tells the story of when Knut came to America with other members of his family, about the year 1875 they settled temporarily in Calmar, Iowa with his married sister Guri Gladem Christianson who had immigrated with her husband earlier to America.

While in Calmer, working for the railroad Knut was going steady with a girl named Anna Beile. Knut was 6' plus a husky blond hunk of a man. But Anna had stiff competition from Maria Gullickson. So Anna was cut out. Knut and Maria went to Pastor Koren to be married and they learned that Anna had been there first. She told Pastor Koren that Knut was promised to her and that a peaceful release was out. Pastor Koren said, Sorry under these terms according to Church Cannon law his hands were tied. Knut and Maria went to the county seat in Decorah and were married by a county Judge. Maria's sister Carrie Gullicksen was a witness to the marriage.

A single man about to immigrate to America could receive from the priest an introductory letter stating that he was of good report, and verifying that he was not promised in marriage to anyone. It seems a tenet of faith that one had to be confirmed before one could marry, and if you were engaged and wished to marry someone else you had to get a peaceable release first.
