There are many sad stories of the polio epidemic of 1948, but Lucy Bell Smith's is one of the most poignant. While pregnant and close to term, Lucy was stricken with bulbar polio. In hopes of saving her life and the baby's, the child was taken by caesarian section. Unfortunately, Lucy did not survive though the baby, Arnold Bell Smith, did.

Lucy's parents were Lee Chapman and Lola Watts Chapman.

Lucy was survived by her husband, Ira. She was buried beside her baby son Aaron.

Her epitaph:
"As a star that is lost
When the daylight is given,
She hath faded away
To shine in Heaven."
