Janice Elaine Phillips, 78, Kokomo, passed away at 8:35 am Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. She was born November 6, 1940, in Woodburn, Indiana, the daughter of the late Marion Robert & Mary Fern (Peters) Snyder. On June 15, 1963, she married Alva Allen Phillips and he survives.

How do you put into words the sum of anyone’s life let alone someone so beloved? If there is one phrase to describe Janice it is Christ follower. Her love for God and his word guided her life from the time she was baptized at 9 years old. Janice knew then the path she wanted to take. Janice served in missions on the McKinley Indian Mission in Washington State which in turn prepared for her missionary works in the Black Forrest area of Germany with her husband and daughter for 14 years. She later in life served in Africa, India, and Nagaland. Over the years she brought many people into a saving knowledge of her Lord Jesus Christ. Janice majored in English and taught school in the US and in Germany. Janice attended Great Lakes Bible College. She began working with George Faull creating what is now Summit Theological Seminary in Peru. She worked there for over 24 years. Janice typed, proofed, and debated many Bible texts, along with giving council to many a student.

All those things combined to make her into the wife, mom, and grandma that we all so dearly love. Janice taught everyone how to love unconditionally, to be kind, compassionate, give wise council, and to put others first. Janice drove hours just to be with us. She loved to play games even when her health started to fail. Each of her grandchildren would feel that she loved them the most because they always felt like they were the most important person to her. Janice gave so generously, her grandchildren always believed she was rich, and she was. She was a grand adventurer, a theologian, counselor, and encourager and her journey is not over it is just beginning.

Along with her husband Alva, Janice is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ann (Chris) Crabtree; grandchildren, Kathryn Elizabeth Travis, Christopher Eric Travis, and Rebecca “Becky” Leann Crabtree; siblings, Robert (Roberta) Snyder, Eddie (Jo Beth) Snyder, David (Susie) Snyder, and Lynda Camerson.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Tom Snyder, Don Snyder, and Sandy Krambs.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2019 with an hour of calling before the service at Jerome Christian Church, 9535 E. 100 S., Greentown, with Pastor David Stokes officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4-7 pm Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in Janice’s memory to Jerome Christian Church Missions, or the Youth Programs Ministry. Hasler & Stout Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
