Allan was born and raised in Waterloo Township, where his father was a farmer.

Allan married Sarah Heckendorn on February 16, 1904 in Elmira, Ontario. The marriage affidavit shows that Allan was a farmer in Woolwich Township.

Sarah and Allan had a daughter, Luella (born May 22, 1905; died December 23, 2006). Luella was married to Harry Boyle (1896-1981).

Sarah and a stillborn daughter died on April 15, 1910.

On June 28, 1911, Allan married Gilda Ann Saltzberry in Waterloo, Ontario. At the time of their wedding, Gilda already had a daughter, Ruth, as did Allan (Luella). The couple had five more children: Fred, Frank, Kenneth, Doris, and Norman.

Allan died in 1926 and was buried beside his first wife.
