Born in London on 1 May 1809 and baptised at the nearby church of St Botolph Without Aldersgate on 6 May 1809. He first came out to Australia in 1828 in charge of cattle for the New South Wales Government. Having delivered the stock he returned to England where his father Benjamin ran a butchering establishment on City Rd, London. On his second journey to New South Wales about 1833, he brought out a large number of valuable sheep for the New South Wales Government or for John McArthur at Camden. He was accompanied on this occasion by his wife Sarah Pincks Slack and their two children - John and Eliza. He established a butchering business in George St in Sydney about 1835. Three more sons were born to John and Sarah in New South Wales - William, James Patrick and Frederick. In 1841 he came to the Moreton Bay Colony with his wife Sarah, sons William, Frederick and James and daughter Eliza and about 1845 he established a butchering business on the west side of East St in Ipswich. Three more sons were born - Benjamin, George and Thomas. After 1850, no further record can be found about John Colburn Slack. There are rumours that he perished in a shipwreck either on a voyage to or from England.
