LAWRENCE, Susan Shryock, 95, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2019. Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Amos and Elizabeth Shryock; and sister, Betty (Eddie) Shokes. She is survived by her loving husband, Walter Lawrence Jr.; four children, Tom Lawrence (Marsha), Liz Wallingford (Dave), Amos Lawrence and Ted Lawrence (Claudia). She was a wonderful grandmother "Gangan" to eight grandchildren, Susie Wallingford, Sarah Mckee (James), Cody Lawrence, Rebecca Meier (Kyle), Travis Lawrence, Ellie Lawrence, Enzo Lawrence and Dario Lawrence. Throughout her 95 years of life, Susie was a devoted mother, adoring (and adored) wife, loving grandmother and active member of her community. Born on March 1, 1924, Susie grew up in Winchester, Virginia. She was an incredibly intelligent woman, graduating as Valedictorian of Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia in 1942 and with her Ph.B. (1944) and M.A. (1947) from University of Chicago. She met her husband, Walter Lawrence Jr. M.D., at a freshmen mixer in June 1942. They married on June 20, 1947, and have enjoyed 72 years of devoted partnership. Following her graduation from University of Chicago, Susie moved with Walter to Baltimore, Md. in 1948, while her husband was in surgical training at Johns Hopkins, New York in 1951, England in 1964 and finally Richmond in 1966. Susie's commitment to her family and the well-being of those in her community marked her life. She served as a high school teacher in Chicago and a Social Worker in Baltimore. In New York, she volunteered at Child Care Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, served as President of the PTA in Pelham, N.Y. and Den Mother of her son's Cub Scouts Pack. In Richmond, she volunteered with Grace House, the Family & Children's Services of Richmond, the Youth Services Commission, League of Women Voters, Citizen's Advocate Committee of Richmond Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and was an active member of St. James's Episcopal Church. Susie was a voracious reader and consumer of information who helped others around her expand their spheres of knowledge. She became quite a handy-woman around the house, was a crossword expert and enjoyed watching sports, especially the Washington Redskins. Her grandchildren fondly remember her hosting them during summer trips and holidays. She was a consummate matriarch and staunch believer in doing the right thing. Susie will be very dearly missed by her family members, to whom she was a quiet source of strength, wit and integrity. Even in her waning years, family could look forward to seeing her smirk, wink or hold hands. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you enjoy a day volunteering in service to others or that you donate to St. James's Children's Center (www.stjchildrenscenter.org), 1205 W. Franklin Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 30, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23230. A memorial service will follow on Monday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at St. James's Episcopal Church, 1205 W. Franklin St., Richmond, Virginia 23220.
