William, aged 75 years, 4 months and 8 days, was the son of Stephen W. and Elizabeth (Fair) Cotter, who were both born in Tenn. Moved to Osage Co., MO in 1844. Then came to N. Mo. In 1885, he married Ellen Oxley. Twelve children, seven girls and five boys. Wife and nine children survive. In 1861, he joined Co. F 23rd MO Infantry with Volunteers, and served till the end of the war in 1865. He farmed southwest of Linneus, MO.
