John was born to William Cox and Mary Cleveland and moved to Saline county, Illinois at about age 3 or 4. He joined the Union army (cavalry) in 1863 and was discharged in Alabama in 1865. In 1866 he married Susan Agnes Harris. They had 4 daughters and 2 sons-1 died as a baby. Susan died in 1882 and he married Nancy Caroline Oglesby in 1884. She died in 1909 and he married Sarah Trousdale in 1914. She died in 1925 and in 1926 he married Elizabeth Bogan. She died in 1937. He lived the rest of his life with his daughters Lina and Ivory.
