Roger “Dave” Lane, 62, a lifelong resident of Kansas City passed away on June 9, 2018. He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas where he was in the first graduating class of Harmon High School. He joined the US Airforce in 1974 and proudly served his country overseas. His time in the military took him to many cities in the US and abroad where he was stationed in Korea for over a year. His interest in all things airplanes lasted throughout his life. He enjoyed airshows, model planes and was a volunteer with the “Save-A-Connie” foundation, working on the Constellation airplanes at their museum. Dave had worked at Warwick Paper for over 25 years when he retired in 2005. Dave loved to share his knowledge of paper and many of his friends and family enjoyed thoughtful gifts of paper and notepads over the years.
In 1980, he married Elaine. He was a loving and supportive husband throughout their 28-year marriage. He became a beloved member of Elaine’s extended family and was close with his father-in-law, Bob, Elaine’s sisters and especially his nieces, Jennifer and Sally. Not having children of his own, Dave loved spending time with the girls and watching them grow up. Dave and Elaine spent many weekends at Bob’s lake house with the whole family and even bought a boat. Although he couldn’t swim, he donned a lifejacket and spent hours exploring the lake and fishing with the family.
Dave had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel to new destinations. He and Elaine took many trips including Seattle, Colorado, San Francisco, Boston, Victoria B.C., Brazil and Argentina. He even took his convertible on a solo trip out west. He always said those trips were some of his favorite memories.
Throughout his life he enjoyed many interests and hobbies. Dave’s taste in music was very eclectic. He enjoyed pop music, soul tunes, country music and everything in between. Every week he heard new music that he would add to his mix and then want to play for everyone who came over. He almost single-handedly kept iTunes in business. Dave also loved old movies and was an encyclopedia of knowledge on all the old stars and who was in what movie. More recently, he loved watching true-crime shows and going to the movies with his friends Kim and Anita.
Dave had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He liked slapstick comedies, playing games and BBQ. He was kind and generous and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Although Dave faced many health problems in the last few years, he remained positive and fiercely independent. Dave had a supportive circle of friends and family who helped him through the difficult times including his generous caregiver Kim, who would take Dave out each week to lunch, shopping, parks and museums. He also spent a lot of time with Elaine and Larry. Dave was so grateful for this time with his dear friends.
The most important thing in Dave’s recent life was his precious dog – Jessie Jane Lane – who was his pride and joy and faithful companion. Dave rescued her 5 years ago and he often said “we saved each other’s lives.”
Dave’s gentle and caring spirit will be greatly missed but not forgotten. He has left an enduring mark on those of us who knew him. He was a devoted husband, loving brother and uncle and compassionate friend. Dave is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brothers – Dennis Lane, Richard Lane and Lee Lane; and three sisters – Judi Carpenter, Kathy Cochran and Lisa Rippee; and his former wife and life-long friend, Elaine Lane.
Graveside services will be Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri.
