A retired rancher, he died June 26, about 4:50 a.m. following a lengthy illness, in St. Mary of the Plains Hospital, Lubbock. Born in Clarksville on July 29, 1900, he had resided in Dickens County since 1907. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 64 years and served a director of Cap Rock Telephone Co., Inc., for 34 years. He was also a former member of the Spur School Board of trustees and was active in Girl Scout work.
He married Bonnie Campell on October 2, 1949 in Spur.
A member of the Methodist Church, McAteer was a former member of the church's official board and past sponsor of United Methodist Youth program.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie McAteer, Spur; two daughters, Cindy Woelke, Fort Worth; Sally Ellison, Spur; four brothers, Frank McAteer, Long Beach, CA; Bert McAteer, Riverside, CA; Forest McAteer, Lancaster, CA; David McAteer, Fort Stockton; one sister, Emma York, Hobbs, NM; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Cattleman's Round-Up for Crippled Children, Abilene.
Pallbearers included, Lynn Buzbee, J.B. Morrison, Oran Hamilton, Wilburn Ball, Al O'Brien, James Wright and Jim Humphreys. Honorary pallbearers were, Jack Beeson, Fred Brandon, Bob Forbis, Bill Ward, Claude Barclay and Cap McNeill.
Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
