Edward Varhely was a professional baseball player.
Edward Varhely compiled a career record of 51 wins and 29 losses in his 205-game pitching career with the Bloomingdale Troopers, Stroudsburg Poconos, Harrisburg Senators, Dallas Eagles, Tulsa Oilers, Atlanta Crackers and Havana Sugar Kings. He began playing during the 1948 season and last took the field during the 1954 campaign.

Edward "Axie" J. Varhely Sr., 72, of Lee Park Avenue in the Lee Park section of Hanover Township, died Saturday at his homeBorn Oct. 13, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Theodore J. and Emilia J. Kotarski Varhely.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II on the Panama Canal.

He was the owner and operator of Var's Restaurant on Lee Park Avenue for 31 years, retiring in 1990.

He and his wife, the former Constance Miller, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in May, 1998.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre.

He was past treasurer of the Hanover Township Lions Club and a past member of the Hanover Township Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5267.

He was a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians' Triple A baseball team for nine years and played in the International League in Havana, Cuba.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry; sisters, Evelyn Walko and Sophie Murphy.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Edward Jr., at home; Gregory, Philadelphia; daughter, Janet Miles, Ellenville, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the James M. Desiderio Funeral Home, Inc., 2 Academy Road, Marion Terrace, Hanover Township, with the Right Rev. Paul White officiating.

Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Parastas will be at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church Building Fund.
