He was born on January 3, 1947, in Utica, the son of James G. and Margaret Cochrane Clarkin.
Alan graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1965 and furthered his education at Saint Bonaventure College and Mohawk Valley Community College. On May 29, 1971, he married Penny Farr at St. Leo's Church, Holland Patent.
Mr. Clarkin was employed with Lockheed Martin for 20 years. Alan founded Adirontek Service, a consulting company for laser safety. He was one of only 52 people to be certified as a Laser Safety Officer in the United States. Most recently, he developed a dental laser at Biogenic Dental Corporation of Utica. In 1995, he founded Clarkin Memorials in Holland Patent. He was a member of St. Leo's Church and was a past vice-president and president of the Lions Club of Holland Patent. Alan's family wishes to express their heartfelt and sincere appreciation to all of his friends and to Hospice Care, who were by his side throughout his illness. Surviving are his wife, Penny; his father; a brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Dorene Clarkin, Floyd; sisters-in-law, Sharon Farr and Keith Young, and Phyllis Racquet and Dick VanDyke; three nephews, Christopher Clarkin, Michael Clarkin and Kevin Clarkin; three nieces, Sonya Ellinger, Toni Green and Amber Coffin; six great-nieces and three great-nephews.
