"Benjiman" is inscribed on the monument; elsewhere, he is named "Benjamin."

Benjiman Shoemaker and Mary Shantz were married on February 23rd, 1864. She died on June 5, 1890. He married his second wife, Catharine Weichel (widow of George Henry Clemens) on February 27, 1898.

Benjamin's farm was a few miles east of Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario.
