Charlotte Observer, The (NC) - Sunday, November 13, 2016
On Saturday evening, November 5, 2016, Sandra Acton Engelhard, Charlotte, passed away at home with loving family by her side. Sandy was born in Windom, Minnesota on Good Friday, March 22, 1940, the daughter of the late Louis and Daynie Acton.
Sandy graduated from Windom High School in 1958, attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis as a Medical Secretary. Her early medical career included employment in Internal Medicine, Executive Secretary to the Minneapolis City Physician and the Principal Secretary for the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota. A loving wife and mother, family first was always a non-negotiable principle for Sandy, consequently, her career was interrupted upon the arrival of her children. She nurtured her family through several relocations ultimately settling in Charlotte. She resumed her medical career in Charlotte as an employee of Carolinas Medical Center; she loved the doctors with whom she was associated in the Neonatal Division of the Department of Pediatrics. After more than 20 years of service, she retired in 2002. Retirement was short lived; in 2003 as a stockholder and officer of Providence Insurance Agency, Inc. Sandy took up a second career as an Administrative Assistant for the organization and its associated entities until 2007. Sandy fervently loved her mini dachshund dogs and the birds that feasted at her feeders; she enjoyed yard work, flowers, physical fitness workouts and her "Church Ladies" book club. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren. Sandy was a long time member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, active in the Altar Guild, book club, and as a volunteer greeter.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Lowell Engelhard; son, Blake Engelhard and wife, Kayo, of Kumamoto, Japan; daughter, Wendy Roberts and husband, Chris, grandson, Jace, and granddaughter, Lauren, of Charlotte; sister, Patricia Simila and husband, Ken, of Salem, Oregon; brother, Dale Acton and wife, Doris, of Prior Lake, Minnesota; and an extended family of loving nieces and nephews.
A service of Celebration of Life for Sandy will be held on November 15, 11:00am, at St. Mark's. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207 or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at pancan.org.
