US Congresswoman. A member of the Republican Party, she served Kansas's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1985 until 1997. Born Janice Lenore Crilly, her father was a newspaper publisher, she received her Associate Fine Arts Degree from William Woods College. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Nebraska and work as an advertising and public relations assistant for a radio station in Omaha. She developed an interest in politics and served as chairwoman for Kansas Congressman Edward "Larry" Winn's campaign. She became an elected official herself, when she served as a councilwoman for the Overland Park City Council. She would go on to serve Kansas as a state senator (1972 to 1984). She defeated Mayor of Kansas City Kansas John Reardon for the Congressional seat held by her mentor Edward Winn in 1984. During her tenure, she served on the Committee on Science and Technology, the Committee on Small Business, the Select Committee on Aging, and the Foreign Affairs Committee. She retired from the political arena after deciding not to run for reelection in 1996.
