Mary Jane (Slette) Berg, of Bangor was called home to her Lord on Thursday, June 20, 2019, surrounded by family at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. She was born on September 15, 1946, to Arthur and Oleanna (Hanson) Slette in Viroqua.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Viroqua. Mary began her college years at Lutheran General and Deaconess School of Nursing in Chicago. She later continued her nursing schooling at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute in La Crosse. Her first role as a nurse began at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Over the years, she quickly fell into the compassionate role of elderly care giving as a nurse in the long term care setting. Some of these facilities included Mulder’s Health Care Facility, Morrow Memorial Home, and Onalaska Care Center. Mary especially enjoyed her sweet older patients, often times praying in Norwegian with them and sharing special moments of tenderness. This tenderness was true of Mary’s character as a whole.

On August 29, 1970, she was united in marriage to Rodney Berg of Bangor at Zion Lutheran Church. Mary took great pride in her “two nice girls.” Sarah and Susie were fortunate to have a mother who worked so hard in order to provide them with an education, immense Christian values, and the blessing of a strong family bond. Mary taught her girls to be kind to all, not to use sharp words, and to be a good example to others. She was a homemaker, a nurse, a mother, a wife, a care giver, and a county fair participant. The county fair was a huge highlight of her summer. Mary won many purple ribbons for her dill pickles and other canning items. In our eyes she was definitely “Best of Show.” Mary also enjoyed traveling. She and Rodney took family vacations with the girls and later other trips with friends. After Rodney passed, Mary had the opportunity to take a wonderful trip to Norway with her sister, Aggie. She also had some road trips across the United States with a special cousin and friend, Carol. In the most recent years, she had been having weekly outings with her friend, Sharon. These trips and special connections were very important to Mary and she treasured them all. She was a member of the Dutch Creek Homemakers for many years, a Bangor First Responder, St. Paul’s Bangor Ladies Aid, Sons of Norway, and a hospice volunteer. Mary always enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and spending time with her family. She was especially known for her dinner rolls, dill pickles, rosettes, and other delicious treats.

Mary is survived by her daughters: Sarah (Jason) Ferrington. and Susie (Tim) Johnson; grandchildren: Jacquelin, Luke, and Seth; sisters: Ellie Slette . and Aggie Zawada; nephews: Allan (Heather) Scherger and Richard (Kris) Scherger; niece, Karen (Tobin) Lorch; a brother-in-law, Robert Scherger; and many other cousins, relatives; two great nieces; and very special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney; her parents, Arthur and Oleanna Slette; her sister, Annette Scherger; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wilfred and Rose Berg; and her sister-in-law, Arlene Scherger.
