She was a member of Brooklyn Presbyterian Church and served in many areas of the church. She received her early education at Myers Street Elementary School and Second Ward High School. She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and English.
While attending Johnson C. Smith University, Mildred married Emanuel Ezra Washington Sr. who preceded her in death. To this union three sons were born. The oldest son, Emanuel E. Washington, Jr. preceded her in death.
They moved to West Point, Mississippi, to help her husband in his ministry. After living in West Point for three years, they moved to a ministry in Kingsport, Tennessee. Later they moved to a ministry in Fort Worth, Texas. Mildred served in many capacities with her husband in the churches in the states in which they lived.
While serving in these areas, Mildred chose to further her studies. She studied at the University of East Tennessee State, North Texas State, Texas Southern, and the University of Texas at Arlington. After being away for 18 years, they returned to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they served several churches.
Mildred began her teaching career in 1961 in Fort Worth, Texas. She taught French and English in junior and senior high schools for 12 years. She continued her teaching career at West Charlotte High School and J. T. Williams Junior High School for 21 years. During the summers she studied at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, the University of North Carolina Charlotte with an extended period of study at the Universale’ Laval in Quebec, Canada. Mildred retired from Northeast Junior High School in 1994.
Mildred participated in a number of activities. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 15 years; she was initiated into the Fort Worth Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; she was initiated into the Chapter of Heroines of Jericho and Eastern Star in West Point, Mississippi, in 1953. Her name was entered into Who’s Who Among American Teachers; she represented J. T. Williams Junior High School as Teacher of the Year. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Heroines of Jericho, Ladies of the Circle of Perfection, and David Austin Court of Cyrene Crusade.
She was also a member of Presbyterian Women of Memorial, several Presbytery committees, and she sang on the choir, which was her passion. Teaching and working with students and people was a joy in her life.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Ronald Phelton (Freda) and Granville Calvin Sr. (Deidre); ten grandchildren, Rashunn Yvette, Rochelle Yvonne, Ranisha Yamen (Keith) Lee, Christina (William) Sims, Jessica Serené, Gavrielle Calisse (Stevenson) White, Granville Calvin Jr., Chakia Hansberry, Cailon Seth, Tyler Micah; seven great-grandchildren, Jalyn Monea, Jasan Montrel Lee, Jurnee Michele Lee, William Christian Sims, Tamiia Mesha Sims, Megan Me’Chelle Sims, and Whitley Le’na Sims; one great-great-granddaughter Kaidence Brionne; three sisters, Inez C. Vance, Juanita C. Wood, Barbara C. Goines; one brother, Hezekiah (Doris) Chisholm Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
