A lawyer, he had previously served in the Michigan State Senate, representing the 36th District from 1965 until his resignation in 1966. Vander Jagt was also a noted journalist and news director, having worked for the WWTV in Cadillac, Michigan. He died from pancreatic cancer in Virginia.
