LAWRENCE D. ADKINS, 80, of West Hamlin, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Lincoln Nursing Home in Hamlin, W.Va., after a long illness. Lawrence attended Center Point Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he was very faithful. He was born July 11, 1929 in West Hamlin, W.Va., and was a 1949 graduate of Guyan Valley High School. Lawrence was the son of the late Hubert and Ida Adkins of West Hamlin. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bethel, Ralph and Darrell Adkins and one sister, Clarine Brewer. Lawrence was self-employed and well known in Lincoln County as a skilled painter. He was also an avid rabbit hunter. Survivors include two sisters, Nina Hazelett of West Hamlin and Ouida Sansom of Barboursville; six brothers, William H. "Oakie" Adkins of Huntington, the Rev. Emmitt Adkins of Cottageville, W.Va., Earl Adkins of Ravenswood, Hubert Adkins Jr. of Alcoa, Tenn., Don and Larry O. Adkins, both from West Hamlin; and many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to all of the nurses at the Lincoln Nursing Home for the wonderful care they took of Lawrence, and also, Hospice of Huntington. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010, at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, W.Va., with his brother, the Rev. Emmitt Adkins and the Rev. Lenny Romans officiating. Brothers will serve as pallbearers. The burial will be in the Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
